Black-and-white portrait of filmmaker and director Markos Kassinos, seated against a dark textured background.

Markos Kassinos

Filmmaker. Obsessed with the complexity of ordinary lives.

I make films about people I feel compelled to know. Everything in life starts with a small signal. A gesture from a stranger, the way someone walks, how the hair is combed, the way they position them themselves in society. To me that's an invitation. Sometimes I follow it into a conversation, sometimes into someone's home and what begins as curiosity becomes a short documentary film. I’m obsessed with understanding people, human behavior and I want to find out about people’s wisdom, the complexity of their lives, the things they've never been asked to say out loud. I use the language of cinema to find out.

Markos Kassinos’ latest short film ‘ACCEPTANCE’ has won the Second Prize for Best Cypriot Short at the International Short Film Festival of Cyprus.

This film presents a local and specific theme that resonates on a global scale thanks to its very thoughtful take on the subject of displacement. Being very sensitive to its subjects, human and animal alike, it shows how society doesn't make space for people trying to live a different kind of life. For being a beautiful testament to resilience we award the 2nd prize for Best Cypriot Short..”
